One of the first questions our Hong Kong golf coaches get asked when giving golf lessons to beginners is what golf clubs to buy. Many new golfers who come to The Hong Kong Golf School to start playing golf should first realise that all of our classes include rental golf clubs from TaylorMade during the lesson programs, so at first, it’s not necesary to fork out for a brand new set of clubs. Once the lessons are over and you feel like you’re confident to play on the course or at least practice on your own, then you can think about buying golf clubs.
The Hong Kong Golf School golf coaches recommend buying genuine clubs. We’ve tried a few of the “Shenzhen Specials” which can cost as little as RMB$1,000 for a complete set, but they can fall apart after one hit. To be honest we’ve also found some of them can last a while, but it’s very much luck of the draw and most of them might look like the real thing, but they dont feel and perform like the genuine products. If you’re on a budget, then you can consider them but there are real sets out there for $5,000 or less and considering each round of golf is going to cost you around $1,000, it’s worth buying decent clubs.
So our Hong Kong golf coaches often get asked, do I buy the expensive ones or the cheap ones. Mizuno and Callaway both sell full sets of golf clubs including bag for around $4000-$5000. These are quite sufficient for most players and will get you through at least the first few years. If you’ve done very well during your golf lesson, then we might recommend you buy a better set such as TaylorMade golf clubs. These can cost around $12000-$15,000 depending on exactly what model you get. If you’re very keen, then go ahead and get something nice and these clubs will last you quite a long time.
